Fourth graders in Courtney Guiton's class hold up drawings and letters they created to share why they love Whitney Point.

Whitney Point Fourth-Grade Teacher Courtney Guiton found a way to help her students make a real-world connection with history, as well as practice their research and writing skills. She saw a Facebook post from a Trumansburg CSD fourth grader who was doing a Social Studies project on a town in New York State, and he happened to pick Whitney Point!

She shared the Trumansburg student’s request with three fourth-grade classes at Tioughnioga Riverside Academy, and they decided that they wanted to help make this fellow fourth-grader’s project a success. Last week, the students wrote letters about why they loved their school and their hometown and drew pictures of their favorite places in Whitney Point.

In addition to helping someone they never even met, this project gave TRA students an opportunity to work together in teams and to focus on what’s great about their hometown!
